True Care Companion is a new support service offering one-to-one care for adults with dementia and other health challenges across Swinton, Doncaster, Barnsley, and nearby areas. The service offers dependable support at home or in the community.
Turning experience into empowerment: Debra’s story
Founded in April 2025 by Swinton resident Debra Bird, True Care Companion was inspired by Debra’s personal journey caring for a loved one with dementia for nearly ten years. Her passion for supporting others is at the heart of her service.
“That experience had a huge impact on me,”
“It made me realise my passion for caring. I wished I’d pursued it earlier, but I’ve channelled that into starting my own business instead.” Debra explains.
A personal approach to care
While many organisations offer care services, Debra identified a key gap: consistency. For people living with dementia, seeing a different carer each visit can be confusing and distressing. True Care Companion offers something different, a familiar, trusted face that builds strong, lasting relationships with clients.
Whether it’s companionship, shopping trips, hospital visits, or light household duties, Debra’s personal approach has already made a meaningful impact, with clients and families praising her warm personality and dependable presence.
“Clients often say I was made for this role, it’s about empathy and building genuine relationships. Clients know who’s coming into their home, which helps build trust and comfort. I’ve developed warm, friendly bonds with every client, and some even insist on a hug when I leave! It’s not just a service; it’s a personal connection.”
Tailored support for every individual
Each client receives tailored, personal support based on their individual needs. From helping a 91-year-old gentleman and his love of teaching chess, to supporting a lady with dementia through weekly shopping trips.
“I’m open to supporting anyone who needs help, regardless of age. If someone in their 40s has a disability or needs support, I’m more than happy to help. My focus is on non-clinical, person-centred support that promotes independence and wellbeing.”
“I also support ad hoc clients, for example, when family members go on holiday, or someone needs temporary help after an operation. While I don’t offer full personal care, I can assist with some aspects where appropriate.”
Supporting big ideas: How Launchpad played a part in Debra's journey
Debra has received valuable support from RiDO’s Launchpad programme, which helped her shape her business idea, develop branding, and access funding for further dementia training.
“A friend recommended Launchpad to me, so I got in touch and was introduced to Julia, who’s been fantastic. I’ve attended several sessions, including a brilliant advertising workshop that helped me get my leaflets and branding sorted.”
Commenting on the advice she would give to someone accessing resources like Launchpad, Debra said: “Launchpad’s support has been phenomenal, shaping my idea, sorting finances, and offering ongoing support.”
Looking ahead, Debra hopes to grow her client base and bring someone on board to work alongside her, while keeping the service personal and consistent.
